Viagem ao centro da vida
"Na sala de cirurgia havia uma paciente com o peito aberto. Anestesiada, ela nem imaginava que sua vida estava sendo decidida naquele instante.
A suspeita era de câncer no pulmão. O cirurgião tirou um fragmento de tecido e o levou até a sala ao lado onde o material foi entregue ao patologista num "minilaboratório" portátil montado na sala ao lado.
Meu nome é Paulo Grimaldi e eu era médico patologista que recebeu aquelas células. Eu tinha pouco tempo. A paciente estava anestesiada, com um talho no peito, as costelas presas por pinças.
Seu futuro dependia da minha resposta. Se eu dissesse “o tumor é maligno”, o cirurgião tomaria uma série de medidas - retirar a parte afetada, fechar, comunicar à família, recomendar quimioterapia, radioterapia entre muitas outras providências. Se eu dissesse “o tumor é benigno”, as medidas seriam completamente outras. Tudo dependia do meu diagnóstico.
Coloquei as células do pulmão da paciente numa lâmina. (Dois retângulos de vidro onde o material coletado é “ensanduichado”. Observei as células no meu microscópio. Parecia um tumor benigno. Ótimo. A paciente poderia comemorar, quando despertasse. Seus parentes e amigos fariam uma festa.
Mas havia algo estranho naquelas células. Meu instinto me obrigou a dizer para o médico:
- Preciso de outras células. Não consegui chegar a uma conclusão com essa amostra.
Alguns minutos de angústia se passaram. E o médico voltou com outras amostras.
Coloquei em outra lâmina. Observei, e observei de novo. Eram células benignas. Seria bem mais cômodo para mim dar meu diagnóstico, tirar o avental e ir para casa tomar um banho. Mesmo assim, algo me importunava. Voltei à sala de cirurgia".
Assim tem início o livro Viagem ao Centro da Vida - as Aventuras de um Patologista. O livro, editado por mim, foi escrito a partir de entrevista com o doutor Paulo Grimaldi, um dos maiores especialistas em patologia do país. Durante quase um ano eu entrevistei o doutor Grimaldi, em parceria com sua nora, Dani Galotto.
O que parecia ser um projeto "científico" e chato, virou uma biografia cheia de emoção. A vida do doutor Grimaldi é uma história de altos e baixos, de coragem, de enfrentamentos tanto na medicina quanto na vida pessoal. Uma lição de superação e idealismo, para um homem que descobriu que queria ser um patologista aos cinco anos de idade.

Journey to the Center of Life
"In the operating room, there was a patient with her chest cut open. Anesthetized, she had no idea that her life was being decided at that moment.
The suspicion was lung cancer. The surgeon removed a fragment of tissue and took it to the next room, where the material was delivered to the pathologist in a portable "mini laboratory" set up in the next room.
My name is Paulo Grimaldi and I was the pathologist who received those cells. I had little time. The patient was anesthetized, with a cut in her chest, her ribs held together by clamps.
Her future depended on my answer. If I said, "the tumor is malignant," the surgeon would take a series of measures - remove the affected part, close it, inform the family, recommend chemotherapy, radiotherapy, among many other measures. If I said, "the tumor is benign," the measures would be completely different. Everything depended on my diagnosis.
I placed the patient's lung cells on a slide. (Two glass rectangles where the collected material is “sandwiched”. I observed the cells under my microscope. It looked like a benign tumor. Great. The patient could celebrate when she woke up. Her relatives and friends would throw a party.
But there was something strange about those cells. My instinct forced me to tell the doctor:
- I need other cells. I couldn’t reach a conclusion with this sample.
A few anxious minutes passed. And the doctor came back with other samples.
I placed them on another slide. I observed, and observed again. They were benign cells. It would be much more convenient for me to give my diagnosis, take off my apron and go home to take a shower. Even so, something bothered me. I went back to the operating room."
Thus begins the book Journey to the Center of Life - the Adventures of a Pathologist. The book, edited by me, was written based on an interview with Dr. Paulo Grimaldi, one of the greatest specialists in pathology in the world. country. For almost a year I interviewed Dr. Grimaldi, in partnership with his daughter-in-law, Dani Galotto.
What seemed to be a boring "scientific" project turned into a biography full of emotion. Dr. Grimaldi's life is a story of ups and downs, of courage, of confrontations both in medicine and in his personal life. A lesson in overcoming and idealism, for a man who discovered that he wanted to be a pathologist at the age of five.
Unfortunately the book is out of print. But there is a possibility of it being reissued as an e-book. If so, I will let you know here.
