Erich von Däniken (1935-2026)

 O suiço Erich von Däniken foi queimado na fogueira pelos donos da verdade. Sempre foi considerado um farsante, autor de livros "pseudo científicos", um enganador. Eu não faço esse tipo de julgamento porque - como diz aquele velho provérbio chinês - quando um sábio aponta para a lua, o idiota olha para seu dedo.

Eu não me importo com o que falam de von Däniken, se as provas de suas descobertas são falsas, se ele não teve o rigor científico exigido nas grandes universidades. O que me importa é que ele popularizou uma ideia revolucionária: a de que, num passado distante, seres de outros mundos (ou dimensões) estiveram na Terra para ajudar na evolução humana.

Não sei se isso é verdade. Mas mantenho minha mente aberta para essa possibilidade. Que - do meu ponto de vista - tem muita possibilidade de ser real. A negação feroz dessa realidade alternativa é um atestado da arrogância humana, que julga ser o centro do universo e o senhor das explicações para tudo o que existe, existiu e existirá.

Erich von Däniken, que faleceu esta semana após vender 63 milhões de cópias de seus livros, obviamente foi uma das inspirações para meu livro História Aberta. Que nasceu como uma edição inteira da revista Planeta, um trabalho de pesquisa que me levou a ler dezenas de livros e pesquisar fontes obscuras numa época que ainda não havia internet. Não sei se tudo o que contei no livro é verdadeiro. A possibilidade de que seja é a maior riqueza desse conhecimento.

The Swiss writer Erich von Däniken was burned at the stake by the self-appointed guardians of truth. He was always regarded as a fraud, the author of “pseudoscientific” books, a deceiver. I do not make that kind of judgment because—as the old Chinese proverb says—when a wise man points at the moon, the fool looks at the finger.

I do not care about what is said about von Däniken, whether the evidence for his discoveries is false, or whether he failed to meet the scientific rigor demanded by major universities. What matters to me is that he popularized a revolutionary idea: that, in a distant past, beings from other worlds (or dimensions) were on Earth to help guide human evolution.

I do not know whether this is true. But I keep my mind open to that possibility—which, from my point of view, has a strong chance of being real. The fierce denial of this alternative reality is proof of human arrogance: the belief that humanity is the center of the universe and the ultimate authority on everything that exists, has existed, or ever will exist.

Erich von Däniken, who passed away this week after selling 63 million copies of his books, was obviously one of the inspirations for my book Open History. It was born as an entire issue of Planeta magazine, a research project that led me to read dozens of books and investigate obscure sources at a time when the internet did not yet exist. I do not know whether everything I wrote in the book is true. The possibility that it might be is the greatest wealth this knowledge offers.
